This exciting project, co-ordinated by CPRE Kent, brought together four very different community groups who were offered the opportunity to record their visions of and views on a variety of travel issues. Click to explore!

IS OUR CHERISHED COUNTRYSIDE WORTH PROTECTING?

The Countryside is essential to all of us, whether we live in it, work in it or simply enjoy hiking through miles of green, rolling landscape. Kent has long been known as the Garden of England, with its wonderful variety of lush, fertile landscapes. Yet sadly, it is no longer something we can take for granted.

KENT'S NATURAL HERITAGE IS UNDER THREAT?

Every decade since the war, an area of countryside the size of greater London has been lost to development. At the same time many of our towns have become rundown as people move out, and volumes of traffic have soared as we commute longer and longer distances.

Bordering London and as the main thoroughfare to the continent, Kent has suffered particularly badly. Two thirds of the county is now disturbed by traffic noise, and 125,000 new houses could be built in the county over the next 15 years.

It's not just pollution and congestion- traffic has risen faster on rural roads than anywhere else, bringing noise and disturbance to quiet areas, and threatening the safety of those who wish to walk, cycle or ride along country lanes.

CPRE Kent's new president Graham Clarke says, "Kent's wonderful countryside is a scource of inspiration to all of us and is truly world famous as the 'Garden of England'. Especially now it desperately needs us to look after it if we want its future to be secure. If you care passionately about our beautiful county as I do, please lend your support by becoming a member of CPRE. Your help will make a difference."

A BATTLE WORTH FIGHTING?

CPRE has been fighting to protect the environment of rural England for most of the last century. The existence of greenbelts, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the survival of hedges owe much to our work. Every year we resist hundreds of damaging developments, and no other national organisation can match our record in protecting the countryside.

We don't just campaign against damaging policies - we campaign for positive practical alternatives. For example, we campaign for urban regeneration of our decaying towns, and we campaign for green farming policies that benefit the countryside. More and more, the government is being persuaded to take our arguments on board. For example, there is now strong planning guidance to encourage new building on land that has been developed previously, rather than on greenfields.

We believe that with care and foresight, it is perfectly possible to protect and enhance the countryside whilst ensuring that our quality of life improves.

DON'T WASTE COMMUNITY CREATIVITY.

This exciting new recycling arts experience is a joint project by CPRE Kent and Whole Hog Celebratory Arts and has been sponsored by the Kent County Council Kent Week. It has travelled to three schools along the North Downs Way during Kent Week to celebrate this unique area of countryside.
Children from the Lady Jane Thornhill School at Wye, Brook Primary School and Smeeth School took part. Whole Hog Celebratory Arts, a rural community arts group, ran workshops designed to raise the children's awareness of the link between the environment and waste issues.

It was an opportunity for those involved to explore their geographical surroundings and value the particular qualities of their area. Each school has helped to make a section of a giant relief map by reusing everyday materials normally disposed of in landfill sites.

The contours were cut from waste cardboard supported on used lemonade bottle tops, whilst the buildings, woods and sheep were made from off cuts of cardboard and paper, shredded newspaper and wool collected from the hedges. The finished map will be on display at the CPRE Kent Exhibition Room, The Country Side Management Centre, Coldharbour Farm, Amage Road, Wye on Saturday 23rd June 2001.
After the exhibition each schools' section will be returned to the classroom as a permanent reminder of the area and a valuable resource for other work on geography, local history & other projects in the future. The project follows the recent success of CPRE Kent's Millennium Visions Travelling project, where local community groups were invited to explore the travel issues concerning their environment.
